Editorials   Ninten-debates: Best racing game.
- By Neal Gittens [Associate Editor]

Travis: Ok, lets do it. Mike, your the expert at starting it off. The subject is best racing game on a Nintendo system.

Nathan: I'm going to cry... to weep... for Mario Kart...I need a hug... topic... too powerful...

Travis: Yeah, we figured you would, and I agree with you, but I’ll make honorable mention to another title.

Mike: The San Francisco Rush series is perhaps the most enjoyable series of racing games made. Shortcuts, crazy jumps, and some of the best multiplayer modes I have ever played, make SFR extremely enjoyable, no matter how many in"car"nations come out.

Travis: ow. That was bad. Someone smack him.

Neal: Yeah, I've never had as much "pun" with a game.

Nathan: I'm about to kick your "butt" with my "foot". Get it? Butt? Foot?

Mike: You know you love that Stunt Mode in Rush 2

Travis: SFR was cool and all that, but I wouldn’t say its the best ever.

Neal: I agree with the fun factor of the Rush series, but not necessarily the top of the field, but it definitely served as a quality rental, though

Nathan: I honestly never had the opportunity to defile my console with the thing. So, it wouldn't be fair for me to voice an opinion. Not even an implied one.

Mike: Well then, you should "rush" out to play it. (tee hee)

Travis: My choice would be Mario Kart, but Nathan would cry if I took his pick, so I’m going to go with World Driver Championship. Boss Studios did one hell of a job. Damn them for being bought out by Microsoft.

Nathan: I personally think that while the game did a lot of things right, there was nothing it did that Mario Kart 64 did not do at least equally well.

Nathan: I meant SFR

Travis: All Hail Mario!

Neal: A la Nate's opinion of SFR, I have to admit that I never played WDC.

Mike: No, Nathan, you were right the first time

Travis: WDC was like a little slice of heaven wrapped in a blanket. Go to ebay and find a copy. Its worth the effort

Neal: But I am surprised that Travis would overlook the GC's latest racing gem, Driven.

Nathan: What was good about it? Was it better than Beetle Adventure Racing?

Travis: Ah, yes. Driven. I’m working on a review of that particular title. Heh, you’ll know how “good” that game is soon enough... And, I use the word “good” very loosely.

Nathan: It sounds like a Vin Diesel movie that would go straight to rental.

Neal: Do I get a raise for plugging Travis' future columns and building the hype?

Nathan: A raise? Does he get paid?

Travis: You would if you got paid.

Nathan: Oh...nice play-off, Travis.

Travis: I’ve got some nickels around here somewhere. Would those suffice?

Neal: Well, getting paid would then count as a raise, wouldn't it?

Nathan: I think getting smiled at (or about) would qualify as a raise.

Neal: Good point. To get paid you need to “work”, and I think that my columns would need "readers" for me to qualify as "working", anyways. [Editor’s note: Neal’s columns appear every Tuesday on NSports!]

Mike: I must add that Beetle Adventure Racing is a very enjoyable game.

Nathan: Oh, the best for the whole shortcut secret stuff.

Travis: Bar is fun. It certainly raised the "bar" on racing games. Damn it, now you’ve got me doing it.

Mike: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop a minute. Oh no, you did not. Rush had the greatest shortcuts of any racing game.

Nathan: I'm going to need some time at a "bar" to deal with these puns.

Mike: BAR raised the bar on racing games?

Travis: Yeah, it takes a lot of balls to release a racing game with only one car.

Mike: Well, let's not forget that BAR's car came in different colors.

Nathan: For me it was beyond awesome. The courses were so beautiful it was almost a privilege to advance. One just HAD to know where the race went next...

Neal: Again, I have to plead ignorance, for not having played BAR.

Travis: Have you played any racing games on the N64?

Neal: Well, I'm not the biggest racing advocate in the world, so I missed out on a lot of them. Too many other games engulfed the lion’s share of my time.

Nathan: Neal, Neal...what are we going to do with you?

Neal: Funny, my parents have wondered the same thing for nearly 24 years.

Travis: OK, back on track, Mike says SFR, I say Mario Kar...err, WDC, and Nathan is right. What’s your take, Neal?

Neal: Well, I have to give a nod to Excitebike. It was one of the original all stars on the NES, and the incarnation on the 64 was well done as well

Travis: What about Excitebike 64? That may not have been the original, but did you like it as much as I did?

Nathan: I thought it lacked a little depth.

Neal: Oh yes, the 64 incarnation has eaten up countless hours of multiplayer around these parts. In particular, the Hill Climb has been a house favorite. I own a record on Hill Climb, which will likely never be beaten. Right up the hill in one shot. BOOYAH!

Nathan: Hey guys! There are some GIRLS on the internet. Over there! LOOK!

Travis: What’s a girl?

Neal: "G-I-R-L?"

Nathan: A girl is like a boy, but with more colors and they don't like worms.

Mike: How about Cruisin’ USA, or Diddy Kong Racing?

Travis: I actually liked Cruisin'.

Nathan: Diddy Kong is like the perfect rebound girl--she just didn't compare, and now it's better not to mention her. She kind of looked like Mario Kart...but then again...

Travis: Diddy Kong was fun, but difficult for me. Those darn silver coins are a pain to get.

Neal: I played Cruisin' USA, but missed Cruisin' Exotica, Cruisin' Europe, Cruisin' the Mall, etc... My loss, I guess.

Mike: Or maybe the oft-forgotten Uniracers, by those backstabbing bastards: Rare.

Neal: Easy Mike, Rare may not be up to what you think.

Travis: We hear the backstabbing as it were may be overplayed a bit. Lets hope so. Boy, this debate went south pretty quick. Lets sum up. Mario Kart rules. The end.

Mike: I think not.

Nathan: I live in the South! That's offensive.

Mike: I SOLD MY MARIO KART TO FUNCOLAND!!!! Mwaahaahaahaaa! *evil laugh*

Neal: How is this guy still employed along side us?

Nathan: You...you...#$%(*#@$)@(#$* sell-out @#$)@*(#$)@#*$ prostitute @#$()@#*$@#($*@#!!!!

Travis: Oh guys, on three. Get him!

Nathan: DU KANNST MICH MAL AM ARSCH LECKEN! UND SCHLECKEN!

Mike: Just bring it.

Travis: Excuse you.

Neal: Wow, we actually drove Nathan into Deutsch. On that excessively European note, we will finish up before we break into other incomprehensible non-English tongues. Until next week… this has been Ninten-debates.
