Editorials   A grand editorial from the dog days of summer.
- By Neal Gittens [Associate Editor]

For yet another column, my head is spinning with a multitude of subjects, and rather than choose one of them and babble endlessly about it, I will give all of them their due amount of space, and then move onward. That having been said, I shall dip once again into the well of thought, and hopefully not have the bucket hit bottom before it is filled. (Boy, was that a long reach for a metaphor or what?)

Eternal Darkness: Man, is this game incredible. I realize that we at NGenres.com already have a pretty heated debate as to which genre it belongs in, (it is definitely an adventure, by the way) and I can honestly say that I could care less which reviews it, because I have to believe that it would be a great review regardless of the reviewing genre. The story is completely immersing, and the play is something to marvel at. The magic system is innovative, and the insanity meter has blown my mind on several occasions. The whole atmosphere is enthralling, and will satisfy nearly any gamer’s need for a mature title. I have beaten it once already, in just over 12 hours, (I am saved prior to the ultimate fight at about 11:53 or so) and I have only owned it since last Friday. That is how addictive the game is. 12 hours of play in just over 3 days. I am starting my second trip through, and will have no problem remaining interested in the game long enough to conquer it the three times required to get the ultimate ending. Great game all around. ‘Nuff said. [Note: I have now finished the game all three times for the best ending. The game stayed fresh, and it was well worth it for me. Great game. Give me a month or so, and I’ll probably be running through it again. A true sign of greatness for any title in my library.]

World Cup Soccer: Brazil has once again run to the World Cup title, and the world has again collectively yawned in complete lack of surprise. I love soccer deeply, (as I have raved about on the site repeatedly) and was again deprived of a game worth getting excited about. I was rooting for Germany, as I considered them the lesser of two evils, so of course, they had to lose. On the plus side, my sister was in Germany for the duration of the Cup, and since Germany beat the U.S., she probably was spared from running for her life from a mob of drunken German soccer fanatics had the U.S. beat the Germans. In all I consider it a wash, as I neither gained nor lost nothing.

South Park: As I write this, I am enjoying the latest episode of South Park, and am again heartily entertained by the witty musings of Mr. Parker and Mr. Stone. This is probably one of the more poignant shows on TV, and can really maintain an incredibly funny theme while running around a basis in current not-really-funny events. If you don’t watch this show, you should, and if you do… well, good. This past week alone, they commented on Catholic molestations, while at the same time showing Martha Stewart shoving a turkey up her ass. There is even a tribute to one of the great all time games: Pitfall. They also make reference to the recent Pledge of Allegiance ruling, which is a favorite for discussion on our NGenres.com employee message board. (Aren’t we the coolest cats around?) Check this show out, as they’ll have new shows the next 2 or 3 weeks. You won’t be disappointed.

Baseball: I’d talk about baseball games for the GameCube, but we’ve said all there is to say about All Star Baseball 2003, so I’ll just ramble about the sport itself. The All Star game is here, (ending in a 7-7 tie, and prompting major anger from many fans, myself NOT included) and my beloved Minnesota Twins are in first place by 7 ½ games. Very little could make me happier than that, unless the White Sox suddenly decide to trade all their starters and rebuild, or they just lose 15 games in a row. Either of those would make me pretty happy as well. OK, that’s enough of my idiotic endorsement of the Minnesota Twins, so we’ll move along. Go Twins!!!

Britney Spears: Just because. Now you are thinking of her aren’t you? You can thank me later.

Microsoft: The fact that Microsoft is developing for the GBA is amusing to me. I can’t think of many games that I’d really be interested in having a GBA version of, but the fact that Nintendo will make money off of Microsoft brings a warm feeling to my soul. Some, such as Gabe at Penny Arcade have suspicions because of this turn of events, but I maintain the utmost confidence in Nintendo’s strategy. Word to your mother.

Well, that should be enough of an idiotic diatribe from me for now, so keep checking in at NGenres.com for more sports news and further intelligent insights from my esteemed colleagues. We won’t let you down. (Actual non-letdown not guaranteed.)
