Preview  All Star Baseball 2002
- By Chris Montreuil

Long on looks short on gameplay. That had always been the knock on Acclaim's baseball offerings for the big N. Sure the game engine for Acclaim's All Star Baseball series has been lauded in the past for its superiority over the competition, but in the end it always felt short in the area of playbility. With the announcement of Acclaim's headfirst entry into Nintendo's next generation console, All Star Baseball 2002 looks to squash that notion and create a completely authentic baseball experience.

Acclaim, not one to rest on its laurels, has once again refined its already impressive game engine to new heights. You can expect ASB 2002 to be the most graphically impressive incarnation of the series yet. With high count polygon models and improved textures, eye candy fans will be thoroughly satiated. In addition to its graphical prowess ASB 2002 also boasts an impressive array of features some of which will be specific to the Cube:

GAMECUBE EXCLUSIVE FEATURES:

  • Two brand new Stadiums to choose from: 2001 All-Star Safeco Field and Puerto Rico Stadium.
  • Updated graphics for many stadiums including PNC Park, Miller Park and Oakland Coliseum.
  • User control over Check Swings and Changing Fielders.
  • All New CPU Defensive Assist Option.
  • Never before seen Broken Bat Technology.

GAME FEATURES:

  • All 30 Major League teams and over 700 players with life-like face textures for superb graphic detail.
  • Cooperstown Hall Of Fame team including Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt and Nolan Ryan.
  • Play by Play and game analysis from Arizona Diamondback's Manager Bob Brenly, and his former national television partner, Thom Brennaman.
  • "Turn back the clock" with classic uniforms for each club like the '62 Mets.
  • All 30 MLB stadiums with active dugouts & bullpens, real time scoreboards and jumbotrons, with stadium features like the waterfalls at Kauffman Stadium in K.C.
  • 130 unique player batting stances, 50 pitching deliveries, and over 1500 motion captured animations.
  • Future throw technology allows you to make incredible super-smooth catches and throws like never before.
  • Innovative 3D batting interface and power/contact swing selection.
  • Season awards like the MVP, Cy Young, Rookie Of The Year, and Gold Glove.
  • General Manager mode lets you trade, sign free agents and draft players.
  • 7 authentic stadium camera angles for that television broadcast view.
  • Game modes include Exhibition, Season, World Series, Home Run Derby and Batting Practice.

After years of refining their craft Acclaim is poised to offer its finest version of All Star Baseball yet. Fans of the series and even those who have doubted Acclaim in the past should look forward to All Star Baseball 2002.
