Preview  NFL Quarterback Club 2002
- By Travis Coats

In general only two videogame football franchises have stood the test of time, EA’s Madden and Acclaim’s Quarterback Club. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. While they both strive for realism, they each feature subtle differences in gameplay and graphics that make them unique.

A preview isn’t the place for opinions on superiority of one over the other, so I will save that for later when both games are released. However, Quarterback Club itself is loaded with general features that any football game should have, as well as some that Madden cannot boast. Many of these are listed below.

Exclusive Quarterback Club license, allowing players to access current and retired members, such as John Elway, Dan Marino, Steve Young, Jim Kelly, and Phil Simms.

Exclusive "QB Challenge" mode, which includes four head-to-head events: speed and mobility, accuracy, long-distance throw, and read-recognition.

More than 1,500 NFL players.

Play-by-play from Kevin Harlan, and color commentary from Bill Maas.

More than 1,500 all-new, motion-captured animations for seamless action on the field.

Real-life player facial textures for more than 350 starting NFL players featuring blinking eyes, jaw motions, and facial expressions.

Five modes of play: Practice, Exhibition, Season, Playoffs, and Quarterback Challenge.

TV-style presentation.

Not too shabby is it? The idea that players will be allowed to control some of the greatest legends of the game from the past, (as well as today’s stars) really sets this game apart from it’s competition.

So which game will win the battle of the pigskin this year? Who knows, and more importantly, who cares. Good games are hard to find sometimes, and both of these football titles should be excellent. It is simply a matter of which franchise interests you most, and personally I’ll probably get both.

NFL Quarterback Club will be available at launch.
