E3 2001 Impressions

Well, as they say, better late then never right?

My experience with Diddy Kong Pilot was a short one, but it was long enough to get a good feel for the game's design. The tilt technology that was pioneered in Kirby's Tilt and Tumble felt more refined for DKP. Perhaps the more detailed graphics and sense of speed enhanced the tilt feature, but it honestly did feel like I had more control in this game than with Kirby's.

To get a sense of how much fun this game is, I suggest you fish out an old copy of Diddy Kong Racing, choose the plane as your machine, and then tilt your N64 controller left and right as you race. I am kidding of course, but it gives you the same effect.

While the graphics and sound of DKP aren't as sophisticated as those found in Diddy Kong Racing, the spirit of that game certainly has been captured, and of course miniaturized for the Game Boy Advance.

As with most games from Rare, I will be picking this title up as soon as it is available.

Donkey Kong may be starring in the next franchise racer for GameCube, but the first Kong to hit the racing scene was Diddy, and no one does it better than the original.

Diddy and pals will once again take to the air in the new Diddy Kong Pilot for Game Boy Advance. With the Kart and Hovercraft no longer an option players will be able to focus on just one vehicle, the plane.

Taking a cue from DKR for the Nintendo 64, Diddy Kong Pilot will feature 3D graphics and worlds for the characters to race in. The GBA will be stretched to the limit as it tries to faithfully re-create the feeling of flying that was prevalent in Diddy Kong Racing.

Unlike the previous game however there is a new twist to this title, or tilt rather. Continuing the technology that was created for Kirby Tilt n' Tumble on Game Boy Color, Diddy Kong pilot will feature the ability to move the Game Boy itself to control the racers instead of the control pad. This will be the first racing game to utilize this technology, and if Kirby's game is any indication this should prove to be quite a humorous and enjoyable experience.

This game may be playable at E3 this year, if that is true you can expect a hands on update soon.
