Preview  Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival
- By Travis Coats

No other game in history has had as many incarnations and names as Street Fighter II. The developer Capcom single-handedly created the art of milking a franchise to death over the course of Street Fighter’s life. With a total of four versions of the same game, one has to wonder why Capcom didn’t release a few more. Come September however, that is exactly what they will do. In it’s fifth and final version, Street Fighter II will make an appearance on the Game Boy Advance.

As a pocket-sized recreation of the latest Street Fighter II, every single character, move, and stage will be preserved for the handheld conversion. This means that over 16 characters and their stages will be available from the start. In addition, the graphics and sound of the original arcade hit have made the transition to the small screen almost completely intact. Everything from the colorful backgrounds, to the near unintelligible sounds Ryu and Ken make has been captured perfectly.

The game’s control may be the only aspect that isn’t quite up to the standards set by its arcade brethren. Since the original Street Fighter II had six buttons, and the Game Boy Advance has only four, purists of the original may be in for an upset. To compensate for this, Capcom has added an extra feature into the game. This feature allows players to simulate the missing two buttons by tapping the existing ones (instead of pushing them down completely) for the desired effect. Despite that small shortcoming, fans of the series will be happy to know that the multiplayer aspect of Street Fighter has been included. (Good thing too, for what is a fighting game without multiple players?) Using the GBA link cable, two combatants will be able to square off for some classic fighting fun.

The legacy of Street Fighter II has been almost ten years in the making, and many fans of the game hold it very close to their hearts. Come October, they will be able to hold in their pocket as well.
