Preview  MX 2002 featuring Ricky Carmichael
- By Travis Coats

The Game Boy Advance has certainly proved something in the short time since it’s release. It is THE system for extreme sport games. Apparently everything comes back to the success of the genre and the game that started it all. I hate to keep mentioning the name Tony Hawk, but it truly seems to have paved the way for similarly styled games such as Dave Mirra’s BMX, Shaun Palmer’s Snowboarder, and the ESPN series of titles.

The latest game is MX 2002 featuring Ricky Carmichael. Here we are with yet another extreme sport game with a famous name attached to it. Perhaps it’s just me, or is there really some sort of trend beginning here? One can truly hope that these games can hold up on their own merits without having to fall back on a big name to generate sales. Speaking of such, MX 2002 does seem to have a few things that will make it stand out from the crowd.

Five separate modes to choose from, including Motocross, Supercross, Amateur, Career, and the ever-present Freestyle.

Thirty riders, most of which are based on real-life counterparts such as the great Ricky Carmichael.

A create a rider feature for those of you who like to tinker.

A detailed combo system for stunts.

The game doesn’t seem to have any sort of multiplayer mode to speak of, but with all of the above features included players should be able to overlook this small oversight.

As I said before there is absolutely no lack of this type of game for Nintendo’s new handheld. If you are a fan of the extreme sports genre, this week of previews will hopefully have given you a small idea of the games you will be able to choose from in the near future. While it has a lot to offer, MX 2002 is simply one of them.
