Preview  Ultimate Mortal Kombat
- By Mike Ryan

It seems as though the Game Boy Advance has, in many ways, become the choice system for both new and old arcade ports. From Super Street Fighter 2 and Pac-Man Collection to upcoming games Tekken Advance and NFL Blitz, arcade games have found a new home on the little portable system. Midway recently jumped on the "porting bandwagon" so to speak with a conversion of the controversial Mortal Kombat series for the GBA.

The game, developed by Virtucraft, is a port of Midway's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, which was an upgrade of sorts to the coin-op Mortal Kombat 3. For those not familiar with the Mortal Kombat fighting system, it is somewhat similar to Street Fighter, except that the game takes less of a cartoonish look and more of a realistic (and violent) look. The most noted aspect of the Mortal Kombat series are the "Fatalities," ways to finish off your opponent via a bloody (and sometimes humorous) act of violence. There are six buttons used in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (High Punch, Low Punch, High Kick, Low Kick, Block, and Run). How the four-button GBA will utilize this button layout is yet to be revealed.

Not much is known about the game, but seeing as though this is a port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the following features should be expected: 24 playable characters (Kitana, Reptile, Sonya, Jax, Nightwolf, Jade, Scorpion, Kano, Mileena, Ermac, Sub-Zero (both classic and new), Sektor, Stryker, Cyrax, Kabal, Sheeva, Sindel, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Smoke, Rain, Noob Saibot, and Kung Lao); two player support; Kombat Kodes to make matches easier, more difficult, or just plain wacky; and possibly more that Midway has yet to announce.

Due out in December, Mortal Kombat Advance is poised to give Tekken Advance a good fight for your money. More on the game as it develops.
