Review Cruis'n USA
- By Rob Schlicht
[Contributing Editor]
Cruis'n USA was the second game announced for the N64, right behind Killer Instinct. A racing game where, instead of driving laps around a track, or a few streets that were made up just for the game, you could drive around the whole country. It was a new idea, and it worked, except for a few places (You see Mount Rushmore in the same two minutes as the Grand Canyon? C'mon!). This was a great game in the arcades.
In 1995.
Aesthetics:
Unfortunately, in late 1996, multiple advances have come and gone, and Cruis'n USA is just plain dated. The graphics are old. The textures and flat, and repeat every two houses, at least. There is a ton of fog, you will literally see the Chicago skyline literally appear when you're two blocks away. And just like in real life, every building is lined up in a straight line, with the biggest one in the middle, and the rest of them getting smaller towards the edges, like a pyramid. Just like in real life.
Sound:
The sound is much, much, worse. The engine noises are flat and forgettable, but there is almost no difference between the selectable cars. Other than when you're revving it, or braking, the engine sounds never change. Add to that one of the worst selections of music imaginable, and you begin to understand. At least you can turn it off.
Control:
Cruis'n's controls aren't great, but they aren't as bad as most of this game. Sure, they're a little bit squirrelly, but it's an arcade game, after all. The camera angles are pretty good, especially the interior, where the game finally gets a semblance of speed.
Multiplayer:
The two-player multiplayer mode is fun at first, till you notice the graphics are even worse to keep the game running halfway smooth.
Gameplay:
Single-player is boring too, especially when you realize you went from San Francisco to Washington D.C. in less than an hour. It's saving grace is the hidden vehicles, specifically the Police Car and the Schoolbus. But only seven vehicles? And that's WITH the hidden ones? C'mon!
OVERALL:
While rushing games out isn't a good thing, this is an example of what happens when games stay in development for TOO long. Shame, shame, Nintendo. Why did you put YOUR name on this trash? Leave it for some other publisher!
