Review Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
- By Rob Schlicht
[Contributing Editor]
In the last two years, Tony Hawk has been rivaled pretty much only by Pokemon in his ability to sell videogames. However, where Tony dominated consoles, Pokemon enjoyed a chokehold on the handheld market, where the lackluster ports of his skateboarding sims weren’t up to snuff. That may change with the GBA, however, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2.
Aesthetics:
Graphically, Tony Hawk is heads and tails above the rest of the lineup. Featuring polygonal skaters in a pre-rendered environment, the new look takes a while to get used to, but soon becomes second nature. Thankfully, this game isn’t plagued by the darkness that seems to overtake many of the Japanese launch titles. Overall, a superb looking title.
Sound:
Tony Hawk games have always been known for featuring great licensed music, but until portable systems start using minidiscs for their format, that just won’t happen. Even still, the game has the best audio on the system. The sound effects are even better, sounding exactly like they did on the Dreamcast and Playstation. Definitely one that’s augmented with headphones and high volume.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is the same as it’s always been, with allowances made for significantly less buttons and a new perspective. A button grinds, B button jumps, and L and R are used for grabs and kick flips. Through different combinations of buttons and directions, you can pull off an insane amount of tricks. There are multiple skaters to choose from, each with their own varying statistics, and many different boards available. I doubted it could be done, but Vicarious Visions has managed to shrink down the magic of the console games on to a portable. The game can last you forever and a half. You can take every single skater through the career mode, unlocking extra skate parks, boards, attributes, and tricks along the way. Without multiplayer, the lasting appeal takes a slight hit, but this is still better than what most of the launch games gave us.
Multiplayer:
There is no multiplayer option, unfortunately. Hopefully it’ll be back in the sequel!
OVERALL:
A title ANYONE can enjoy, skateboarding fan, or not. Hell, I hate skateboarding, but I love this game!
